Goals and Objectives ^

The overall goal of the American Indian Certification of Substance Abuse Counselors/Administrators program will be to increase the effectiveness of substance abuse programs in Indian Communities. Specifically, the Certification program shall have the following objectives:

  1. To provide a certification process that will ensure that all substance abuse counselors meet a minimum acceptable standard of qualification. That this standard will enable them to provide and deliver quality services to Native American community they serve.
  2. To assure that these providers have a thorough knowledge of both Native American ways along with nationally acceptable skills in the field of substance abuse treatment. That the following areas are used as a prerequisite to the development of competency such as Understanding Addiction, Treatment Knowledge, Application to Practice and Professional Readiness.
  3. Each provider must clearly have a basic understanding of addiction that includes knowledge of current models and theories, appreciation of the multiple contexts within which substance abuse occurs, and an awareness of the effects of psychoactive drug use.
  4. Each provider must be knowledgeable about the continuum of care and the social contexts affecting the treatment and recovery process.
  5. Each provider must be able to identify a variety of helping strategies that can be tailored to meet the needs of the identified client.
  6. Each provider must be prepared to adapt to an ever-changing set of challenges and constraints with a positive attitude toward reflecting openness to alternative approaches, appreciation of diversity, and a willingness to change.

Written Testing in Accordance with ICRC ^

Testing will be done a quarterly basis through the IACC office. The IC&RC AODA written test will be administrated by IACC staff. When an applicant passes the written test he/she will be issued a Certification for their appropriate level.

Biographical Information ^

The Indian Alcoholism Commission Certification Board offers certification to qualified alcoholism/drug abuse counselors. The Board was created in response to the increasing accountability required by the federal government, The State of California and the demand for qualified counselors who serve Indian populations.

The Indian Alcoholism Commission of California, Inc. (IACC) offers certification of qualified substance abuse counselors, regardless of race, color, age, handicap, or sexual orientation.

Certification attests to the professional qualifications and competence of the counselor.

The Indian Alcoholism Commission of California, Inc. (IACC) in consultation with other certifying Boards has developed the specific requirement for certification and the process by which it is sought and granted.

National and state alcohol and drug groups and authorities in American Indian communities, nationwide, commonly recognize the standards for certification and are similar to the standards established by other states and national certification bodies.
